Innovation Fund Denmark has granted DKK 6.6 million to research on using sensors to improve the quality of life for elderly citizens with dementia. CACHET is involved in the project through DTU Compute. Other partners in the project are Aalborg University, The SIF Group, Væksthus Hovedstadsregionen and the care homes Kullegaard and Skovhuset.
Sensors have a large potential to promote quality of life for elderly citizens with dementia. A large part of Danish elderly citizens suffers from dementia, and may have trouble expressing their needs. The project PACE – Proactive Care for the Elderly with Dementia, will take the digital age to nursing homes, through utilizing sensors to improve the quality of life for elderly citizens with dementia, without interfering with their private life.
The project group consists of a series of experts, facilitators and users, whom joined have a solid foundation for integrating a solution into the Danish healthcare. The project group includes two universities (the Technical University of Denmark and University of Aalborg), which contributes with expertise in Big Data and design of processes with user participation and co-design. The nursing homes Plejecenter Skovhuset and Ryetbo will handle the technical and observational parts of the project, while the architect firm Kullegaard A/S will anchor issues on implementation in future nursing homes in solid knowledge.
Væksthus Hovedstadsregionen will perform the important element of dissemination of the project and the project results, both nationally and internationally, while the SIF Group will conduct the selection and handling of welfare technologies.
The economic potential for Danish business is considerable. It has been estimated that the annual cost of dementia in the western world surpasses one trillion (one thousand billion) Danish kroner. Techniques that lowers that amount, by t.ex. reducing hospitalizations, thus have a huge earning potential.
